                                      ROOM NINE

In Room 9 we have Year 5 and 6 students.  Our Teacher is Mrs Pierey.  We are learning lots of different things.  Here is a preview of what we have been doing in class.

                                      Homes Around The World

Room 9 are learning to write explanations about different homes around the world.  This includes how they are made, who lives in them, why they are built the way they are, location on the world map, materials etc.  We have studied igloos, cappadocian caves, moroccan tents and yurts.  Here is some examples of our explanations.

                                      What is a Yurt?

                                      Picture
A yurt is a circular tent made of willow sticks, canvas and trellis.  3 or 4 sheets are tied together to make a circular enclosure with a door frame.  A lot of willow sticks are bent a wee bit, then tied to the top of the walls with canvas over top, and a hole in the roof for smoke to get out.  Nomads live in Yurts because it is easy to put up and take down and it is easy for the camels to carry.  They move so their camels can eat and survive.  Nomadic people are natives to Mongolia.  They live in the middle of Afghanistan and Tadzhikistan which is Central Asia.  It takes half an hour to put up for two people.  In the summer months Nomads move to the higher pastures with the yaks and sheep.

                                      What is a Cappadocian Cave?

                                      Picture
A Cappadocian Cave is a cone made out of ash (aka tufa). A long time ago a volcano erupted and spewed out lots of ash and formed cones made out of it.  Over the years it hardened up but it is still pretty soft so you can dig through it to make a home.  Tufa stone is hard.  People made homes by digging into it.  Many years ago, 30,000 people lived in them.  They keep warm in the winter by a fire lit in the middle of the cave and it keeps cool in the summer.

Students have also been working on a project guided by Mrs Huddleston. They have been practicing building structures out of different materials and how to make them strong with bracing etc.

We are in the process of building a town/community showing structures made.  Students have been learning about circuits and intend to have real lights in their buildings and traffic lights that go!  It has been an engaging and motivating unit for the students of room 9.
